Deep Cleaning vs. Regular Cleaning in Toronto: What's Actually Different?
Not sure whether you need a regular clean or a deep clean? Here's what each includes, what it costs in the GTA, and how to choose the right service for your home.
You've probably seen cleaning companies in Toronto offer both "regular cleaning" and "deep cleaning" — but the difference isn't always clear. Are you overpaying for a deep clean you don't need? Or booking a regular clean that won't actually solve the problem?
Here's the honest breakdown so you can book the right service and not waste money.
What Regular Cleaning Covers
A regular clean (also called a standard or maintenance clean) is designed to keep an already-clean home in good condition. It's the most common service homeowners in Toronto and the GTA book on a recurring basis — weekly, biweekly, or monthly.
A typical regular cleaning session includes:
- Vacuuming carpets and rugs, mopping hard floors
- Wiping down kitchen counters, stovetop, and the exterior of appliances
- Cleaning and sanitizing bathrooms — toilet, sink, shower or tub, and mirrors
- Dusting all accessible surfaces, shelves, and furniture
- Making beds and light tidying
- Emptying garbage and replacing bin liners
What it doesn't include: A regular clean stays on the surface level. Cleaners aren't pulling out your fridge, scrubbing grout with a brush, or cleaning the inside of your oven. If those areas need work, that's deep clean territory.
What it costs at Lumen Services: Regular cleaning starts at $160 per visit for a standard home up to 1,600 sq ft, going up to $320 for homes over 3,000 sq ft. These are recurring rates including HST. See our full cleaning cost breakdown for Toronto and the GTA for all pricing tiers.
What Deep Cleaning Covers
A deep clean is a more intensive, time-consuming service meant for homes with built-up grime in hard-to-reach places, homes that haven't been professionally cleaned in a while, or anyone who wants a thorough reset.
Everything from a regular clean is included, plus:
- Scrubbing grout lines in kitchens and bathrooms
- Cleaning inside the oven, microwave, and refrigerator
- Wiping down baseboards, door frames, and light switch plates
- Removing hard water stains and soap scum buildup
- Cleaning behind toilets and under sinks
- Detailed attention to vents, fan blades, and light fixtures
- Cleaning interior windows and tracks
- Cleaning inside cabinets and drawers upon request
A deep clean typically takes 1.5 to 3 times longer than a regular clean, depending on home size and condition.
What it costs at Lumen Services: Deep cleaning starts at $240 for a standard home up to 1,600 sq ft and goes up to $480 for very large homes. All prices include HST. Full pricing details are in our Toronto cleaning cost guide.

Which One Do You Actually Need?
Book a regular clean if:
- Your home is already in decent shape and you want to maintain it
- You clean regularly yourself but want help staying on top of it
- You're looking for a recurring weekly, biweekly, or monthly service
- You'd rather spend your weekends doing something other than scrubbing bathrooms
Book a deep clean if:
- You haven't had a professional cleaning in more than three months
- You're moving into or out of a home or apartment (also see our move-out cleaning checklist)
- You've just finished a renovation or construction project
- There's visible buildup — grout stains, hard water deposits, grease on cabinets
- You're preparing for guests, a holiday, or putting your home on the market
- You want a reset before starting a regular cleaning schedule
The smartest approach for most people: Book a deep clean first to get everything to a baseline, then switch to regular cleanings on a recurring schedule. This is more cost-effective over time than booking sporadic deep cleans whenever things build up. For a standard house, that's $240 for the initial deep clean, then $160 per regular visit going forward.
What About Commercial Spaces?
The same logic applies to offices and commercial properties, but the specifics shift. A regular office clean focuses on trash removal, floor care, desk and surface wiping, and restroom sanitation. A deep commercial clean adds carpet extraction, high-touch disinfection, window washing, and detailed floor care.
If you manage an office or commercial property in the GTA, the frequency depends on foot traffic. High-traffic spaces like retail or medical offices benefit from daily regular cleaning with monthly or quarterly deep cleans. Call us for commercial pricing — it's quoted based on square footage and scope.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I get a deep clean? Most homes benefit from a deep clean once or twice a year — typically in spring and fall. If you have pets, young children, or a large household, quarterly deep cleans may be more appropriate. Between deep cleans, a recurring regular clean keeps things maintained.
Can I book a deep clean as a one-time service? Yes. Many clients book a single deep clean before a move, after a renovation, or as a seasonal reset without committing to a recurring schedule. One-time deep cleans follow the same pricing as listed above.
How long does a deep clean take compared to a regular clean? For a standard house up to 1,600 sq ft, a regular clean takes about 4 hours and a deep clean takes roughly 6 or more hours. The difference grows with home size and condition.
What if I'm not sure which service I need? Call us and describe your situation. We'll recommend the right service — and if a regular clean will do the job, we'll say so. We'd rather save you money and earn a recurring client than overcharge once.
Is a deep clean the same as a move-out clean? Not exactly. A move-out clean includes everything in a deep clean but also covers inside all closets, interior windows, and behind/under every appliance — meeting the standards landlords and property managers expect during inspections. Move-out cleans start at $260. See our move-out cleaning checklist for the full scope.
