How to Clean Your Kitchen Appliances Like a Pro
Your appliances work hard every day — here's how to keep them spotless, safe, and running their best.
Kitchen appliances are among the hardest-working items in your home — and often the most neglected when it comes to cleaning. Regular care keeps them hygienic, extends their lifespan, and even helps them run more efficiently.
The Refrigerator
Empty shelves every 2–3 months and wipe down with a solution of warm water and mild dish soap. Don't forget the door gaskets — grime loves to hide in those rubber seals. Clean the exterior with a microfiber cloth. For stainless steel, always wipe in the direction of the grain.
The Oven
For self-cleaning ovens, use the built-in cycle occasionally — but know that it generates intense heat and some odor. For manual cleaning, a paste of baking soda and water applied overnight works well on the interior. Avoid harsh chemical sprays near heating elements.
The Microwave
The easiest trick: place a bowl of water with a few slices of lemon inside and heat for 3 minutes. The steam loosens all spatter, so the interior wipes clean in seconds. Clean the turntable plate separately in the sink.
The Dishwasher
Run an empty cycle with a cup of white vinegar on the top rack once a month to remove buildup and odours. Check the filter at the bottom regularly — food debris collects there and can affect performance.
The Kettle and Coffee Maker
Scale buildup is the enemy of these appliances. Run a cycle of equal parts white vinegar and water, followed by a plain water cycle to rinse. Do this every 1–2 months depending on your water hardness.
Of course, if deep appliance cleaning feels like too much, LUMEN's deep cleaning service covers the interior of your oven, refrigerator, and microwave as part of a thorough whole-home reset.
